IS FUNERAL COVER ONLY FOR FAMILY?
No. You can get an individual plan that covers just you. No other family members need to be added on that policy. However, the family funeral plan is a more popular choice and the premiums are more affordable. It also allows you to add on extended family members so you do not have to bear the financial impact of paying for their funeral when they pass.
WHO IS CONSIDERED FAMILY?
You and your immediate family (spouse and children) are covered as well as any extended family members like parents and in-laws. Remember that any person who is a first-line blood relative of you and your spouse, or any biological or legally adopted child will qualify as a qualifying family member and can be added to the same policy.
WHAT IS THE COST OF FUNERAL COVER?
The cost of funeral cover can start from as little as R25, depending on the funeral insurer of your choice. The monthly premium depends on the age of the members on the policy, the number of family members and the payout amount you choose. Older family members will pay more than younger members as death becomes more likely with advancing age.
WHAT IS THE MAXIMUM AGE LIMIT?
Cover will not end if you start your policy earlier in life, provided that your premiums are paid on time every month. However, if you are only starting cover now then the maximum age of the policyholder must be 65 years or younger. Other family members must be 85 years or younger. Children (under 18) can be included on cover.
WHAT IS THE WAITING PERIOD?
There is no waiting period for claims in the event of accidental death. However, death due to natural causes is subject to a 6 month waiting period. This is done for your protection to ensure that others do not join and claim immediately without contributing to the pool. Death due to suicide is only covered after 12 months of uninterrupted cover.
HOW DOES SAME DAY PROCESSING WORK?
If all documentation is in order and the claim is valid, then the claim can be processed within the same day. Payout may also occur on the same day, depending on the time when the claim is processed and your nominated bank account. If there is no fraud suspected that requires further investigation, then claims could even be processed within 4 hours.
